The word istikharah comes from the root of khayr. Khayr in the Arabic language in its origins is representative of all that is good. So, Khayr is an umbrella word that represents everything that is good. Istikharah means looking for the good and looking for what is good. This is the meaning of the word istikharah.
Like the meaning, the salat’-l-istikharah prayer, which comes from the Sunnah of the Prophet, is a Sunnah of the Prophet narrated with authenticity and an extremely outstanding practice of the Messenger. However,Like the meaning of the word istikharah, the purpose of the salah is to seek from Allah what is good. I want insha’Allah to have this session to explain the procedure and purpose of istikharah.
I’m going to divide today’s presentation into two parts. The first part will focus on the ritual itself, that is, the technical aspects, the procedure, the concept and the result of istikharah. The second part of the conference will focus on the purpose of istikharah, which explains the meaning and beauty of the istikharah’s appeal in itself because it unlocks the purpose and reason why we even do it.
To start with the technicalities, I would like to start with some basic points. The first is the concept of istikharah to understand istikharah conceptually and what it is. I can better explain what istikharah is by explaining to you what is not istikharah. As they say in Arabic, sometimes the best way to know something is to know otherwise. So,The best way I can help you understand what istikharah is conceptually and the role and purpose of istikharah is to explain to you what is definitely not.
Istikharah is not a Magic 8 ball. Did you ever buy that? You get it at the mall as a joke gift. You ask the Magic 8 ball, “Should I go to the mall today?” [Shake it]. “Perhaps.” This is the Magic 8 ball. What I’m trying to say by giving you this silly example is what people play when they play with the Magic 8 ball. It’s throwing a random question, waving the Magic 8 ball and getting a magic answer and go ahead. It’s like throwing the dice. Istikharah is not that.
Decision making steps
Istikharah is the third of a three-step decision-making process. The first step of a decision-making process is to use the intellect, ability and critical thinking given by God with which Allah has blessed each and every human being in different capacities.
Allah has granted each human being the ability to take into consideration the factors and weigh different options and think, reflect, contemplate and process. That is the first step of the decision making process in the life of the believer. First he uses his’ aql, intelligence and ability to think that Allah has given him.
There is a reason why Allah emphasizes the ‘aql, the uli’l-albab, and this kind of things in the Qur’an because they are the greatest blessings of Allah. That is the first step of the decision-making process: take in consideration of your circumstances, look at the options available to you, and then sit down and think and try to find out and do a little research and try to come to a conclusion. At least try to limit your options and come to a conclusion. This is number one.
Therefore,The second step of a decision-making process is istisharah. It is the Arabic word to seek advice and seek advice. So,The next step in the process is to seek advice and advice, and it really depends on the type of decision you are trying to make. If you want to buy a car, first conduct an online investigation, buy vehicles and perform driving tests and reduce to three or four different cars you are thinking about.
So, what you could do, for example, is to go with a brother of the masseur who is a car mechanic. Sit down with that brother and say: “Brother, I want you to advise because you have experience and you have a lot of knowledge about cars, what do you recommend? These are the three or four cars I’m looking at.” He says: “I would not buy it because it has transmission problems, this car wears out very fast, etc.”
Now you are looking for advice and advice. So,If it is a more personal matter, something that is a lifestyle decision, then seek the advice and advice of someone who cares about you with sincerity and honesty, someone who has experience and maturity, and may be spiritually focused to have a global Perspective well that can provide you.
That is istisharah and seek advice. This is the second step of the decision-making process.
Moreover,The third and final step of the decision-making process is now istikharah. What happened up to this point is that he started with no idea of what to do. You reduced it to about half a dozen different options, looked for advice, received advice from someone and have reached your last two options. At this time, you are struggling with this or that and you are starting to lean a little more in one direction. So, You are thinking of two cars and you are inclining to buy a convertible, for example, random example. You’re thinking about buying the Camaro in the mini-van. Do not believe it, but nevertheless for some strange reason you are in conflict. Maybe you have two children, but it does not matter, they can sit in the backseat.
You are starting to lean in one direction, but you are little in conflict and you just need a little push and convenience. So,You are looking for that confidence to make the decision that you have come with critical thinking: apply your intellect and do some research, and seek advice. You are leaning in one direction but you needA little confidence and a certain clarity of heart. This is where the istikharah comes in.
